United Way of Greater Rochester Pays Retirees Dues

Thank you to the United Way of Greater Rochester!!

The United Way Retirees Association Board and staff would like to express their sincere appreciation to the United Way of Greater Rochester for making a continuing commitment to sponsoring their retirees’ dues in the organization.  Peter Carpino, CEO of the United Way of Greater Rochester each year approves covering the dues for over 30 retirees (a practice which began in the 1990’s) in addition to supporting UWRA’s organizational campaign with an annual gift.   As one of UWRA’s ardent supporters we wanted to get some insights on the reasons behind their support.  Janet Zienkiewicz, Senior VP for Human Resources has offered the following thoughts:

Why do we support UWRA?
We believe it’s important to have an organization like UWRA that offers the opportunity for retirees to continue to LIVE UNITED and stay involved in any number of ways.

Why do we pay the dues for retirees?
United Way of Greater Rochester was founded in 1918.  Our long history in this community was complemented by those who have gone before us.  We stand on their shoulders so to speak as we carry forward the collective legacy they created and continue to build on that legacy.  Many of our retirees had very long careers with United Way of Greater Rochester.  Several had worked for a number of other United Way organizations and chose to end their working career here in Rochester.  We value their service to the organization and their loyalty to our community.  Paying their dues is just one small way we can demonstrate our appreciation.  It’s also important that our retirees have the opportunity to continue to feel connected and membership in UWRA is one way we strive to continue to cultivate engagement for retirees.

Relevance of UWRA Services?
There is great diversity in the types of services that are offered through UWRA.  Individuals can become involved in whatever way they choose.  The onboarding and mentoring programs are key to positioning new executives for success and longevity within the system.  The member services offered are a great benefit for both eligible active employees and retirees.

Aspirations or suggestions?
I encourage you and your board to continue to look for creative ways to engage retirees in supporting your mission and vision.  There is a wealth of knowledge and talent among retirees.

Thank you to the United Way of Greater Rochester and all the United Ways that provide an ongoing investment to UWRA through a gift to our annual campaign (listing provided in the Annual Report on our website www.UWRA.org); and if your United Way is not currently an organizational member please consider a donation.  Other ways local United Ways can support UWRA include the following:

• Consider, like the United Way of Greater Rochester, paying UWRA individual membership dues (only $20 per person annually) for your retired staff

• Help get the word out about UWRA to your staff and retirees.  Mention this great resource, post a UWRA website link on your internal websites - keep your retirees involved and engaged with each other and in the United Way mission.

UNITED we can truly accomplish more!
